Coal can be classified into subbituminous coal, lignite, anthracite, and bituminous coal. Of the four kinds of coal, anthracite is the hardest and has the highest carbon content.

The whole process to deal with coal is as follows: The raw coal is first sent to a belt conveyor to a preparation plant located at the mining site. The plant is responsible for removing some unwanted materials such as dirt, rock, ash, and sulphur in order to increase the coal's heat value. Coal crusher can resize the coal stones so that they can be easily processed. In general, the coal's Mohs hardness is below 5. After the crushing process, the coal will be conveyed via belt conveyor to the vibrating screen so as to sieve out the coal by size. In addition, in order to remove water from the products, dewatering screen is necessary.
