New Zealand mine blast leaves 27 missing

Rescue workers are trying to contact 27 miners missing after an explosion at Pike River Coal Co’s coking mine on the west coast of New Zealand. mobile crusher

Two miners emerged after the blast and indicated that three colleagues were on their way to the surface, police said in a statement.
Ventilation inside the mine may have been compromised by the explosion which took place about 4pm local time, police said. Minister of Energy and Resources Gerry Brownlee said he is travelling to the region and that a local mine rescue team had been activated.
There were no indications of “heightened risk” at the mine before today’s accident, according to Andrew Little, the national secretary of the Engineering, Printing & Manufacturing Union, which represents 71 of about 140 workers at the mine. vibrating screen

Pike River, near Greymouth, is part-owned by India’s Gujarat NRE Coke Ltd and Saurashtra Fuels Pvt who also take part of its low-ash, low-phosphorus coking coal. The mine is forecast to produce 320,000-360,000t in the year ending June 30, the company said on October 19.
New Zealand’s last mining disaster occurred in 1967, when 19 people died in an explosion at the Strongman coal mine, also near Greymouth.
The company’s shares fell 14% to 61 Australian cents in Sydney before they were halted from trading. The stock fell 4.4% to 88 New Zealand cents at the Wellington close.
One person may have been killed in the blast, the New Zealand Herald said, citing a report on Newstalk ZB. Five miners have walked free from the mine, Sky Television News reported, without saying where it obtained the information.
Mining employs about 6,000 people in New Zealand, according to government website www.beehive.govt.nz. The industry earned about NZ$1.1 billion (US$853 million) in export receipts in 2009.

Stockpile: Miners soften along with commodities

There were only a handful of gainers on London’s main board this week as both precious and base-metal prices were lower overall.

Over the past few days, the price of copper had recovered to about US$8,485/t on Friday morning from much lower levels earlier in the week thanks to some better-than-expected US economic data and the continued strike action at Collahuasi, the world’s fourth-biggest mine.

The price of gold has not fared any better, also losing some ground over the past seven days. It touched US$1,360/oz this morning, some way off the all-time high of US$1,424.60/oz on November 9.

UK Coal was the top gainer, adding nearly 6% this week. No corporate news was forthcoming to explain the gain and the even with the gain, the share price remains 46% lower since the start of the year.

Centamin Egypt Ltd, the Egyptian gold producer, was the only other gainer of note, adding 3.4%.

South African chrome and platinum group metal producers International Ferro Metals Ltd and Aquarius Platinum Ltd, fell the most this week, dropping by 10% and 11% respectively.

No surprise that Western Coal Corp was amongst the biggest risers on AIM. The company received a US$3.2 billion bid from Walter Energy Inc, to create one of the world’s largest coking-coal producers. The shares gained 38.5% in the week.

Last week’s top two gainers continued rising in the week, Red Rock Resources plc added another 26%. Last week, the company announced closure of a manganese deal in one of its largest investments, while also reporting gold production from Colombia. Regency Mines plc, Red Rock’s largest shareholder added 63%.

Bellzone Mining plc was a notable loser. The Guinean iron-ore developer shed 9.4% after a state of emergency was declared in the West African country due to violence after a contested political election result.

Chinese miners rescued

Twenty-nine miners trapped in a flooded Chinese mine since Sunday morning have been rescued.

After the initial incident, the deputy mine manager led a team of seven rescuers to help their colleagues but were then trapped themselves. However, the rescue team and original group of miners have all been found alive, and are now receiving medical treatment.

Meanwhile, the 29 miners trapped after an explosion at the Pike River coal mine in New Zealand on November 19 remain unaccounted for.

Pike River said on November 21 a drill hole planned to intercept a roadway within the mine will provide rescuers with more information about gas levels in the mine’s air.

“It is expected the drilling will begin today (November 21) but it is not known how long it will take to reach its target,” the company said.

“If the ground the drill bit passes through is not stable, the hole will need to be encased to prevent its collapse. That would slow progress.”

A statement from New Zealand police said it had been informed the drilling operation had reached a depth of 142m, however the crews had encountered heavy rock formations and breakthrough was still “some hours away”.

A robot and remote, real-time gas sampling equipment are being readied to assist rescue efforts.

Thailand’s PTTEP join forces in US$2.28 billion joint-venture

Thailand has made its first foray into Alberta’s oilsands through a US$2.28 billion joint venture with Norway’s Statoil, which has been developing a relatively small but controversial project in northern Alberta.
Statoil says PTT Exploration and Production will buy a 40 per cent stake in its Kai Kos Dehseh oilsands project, which is designed to produce about 10,000 barrels per day when the first phase moves into production early next year. The firm is awaiting regulatory approval to boost output to 40,000 barrels per day.
The global energy giant, which is partly owned by the Norwegian government, will hold onto the other 60 per cent of the project, remain the operator and be responsible for marketing its production.
"This transaction underlines the quality of our Canadian resources and demonstrates our ability to create value as an oilsands operator," Statoil?s chief executive officer, Helge Lund, said in a statement Monday.
Environmentalists and representatives from aboriginal groups in northeastern Alberta travelled to Norway last May to urge Statoil shareholders to pull the company out of the oilsands.
However, shareholders voted 98.6 per cent to reject a motion put forward by Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund demanding the company stop developing the project.
Statoil’s position is that it is using technology that will reduce the environmental impact from extracting the bitumen, the tarry substance that needs to be heavily processed into a lighter type of crude refineries can handle.
PTT and Statoil share the same environmental ambitions, said Statoil’s Canadian president, Lars Christian Bacher, in an interview.
"We view PTT E&P as a good match. Technology development has always been a part of Statoil’s DNA. I feel we are on the same page with PTT," he said.
PTT is the latest Asian player to make a move in the oilsands, the world’s largest crude reserves outside of Saudi Arabia. Chinese, Korean and Japanese investors have all snapped up stakes in various joint-ventures.
"It’s just another example showing that oilsands is viewed as a highly valued commodity by the international energy sector," Bacher said of the deal announced Monday.
The proposed transaction comes amid some confusion about the Canadian federal government’s policy towards foreign ownership of major natural resources since Industry Minister Tony Clement killed the US$38.6 billion takeover of PotashCorp (TSX:POT) by Anglo-Australian mining company BHP Billiton Ltd.
While the Kai Kos Dehseh oilsands project is nowhere near as valuable or unique as PotashCorp, the world’s largest producer of a key fertilizer ingredient, there have been questions about how receptive Canada is to investments in the oilsands by state-controlled companies.
But Bacher said he does not foresee any issues on the regulatory front.
"This is not an acquisition as such. This is a partnership being entered and you have seen a lot of deals like this historically and I see this not being any different from any of those," Bacher said.
Statoil took control of Kai Kos Deseh in 2007 through its acquisition of North American Oil Sands Corp. The company uses high-pressure steam to draw the bitumen from deep underground, instead of traditional mining techniques.
PTT, Thailand’s only petroleum exploration and production company, is 65 per cent owned by conglomerate PTT Public Company Ltd,, which is controlled by the government of Thailand.

Each year aggregate companies in Iowa produce about 35 million tons of raw material from over 500 locations to supply a myriad of construction projects across the state. The bulk of this supply is extracted from the familiar pits and quarries where gravel deposits and limestone bedrock are close to the land surface. But at eight locations across the state (Jasper, Louisa, Marion, Poweshiek, Scott, Story, Van Buren, and Webster counties), where geologic and market conditions permit, limestone for aggregate is extracted from underground mines.
Though more costly than quarrying, the underground mining of limestone can be both economical and necessary in some areas of the state. Shallow rock units, which were once acceptable, may no longer meet newer engineering standards for construction aggregate. In other instances, it is not economical to strip both the overlying glacial deposits and the poorer quality, shallow bedrock in order to quarry. An operator must decide whether to cease production and move to an alternate location, if one exists, or to shift operations underground. Numerous factors are weighed to determine the feasibility of such a production change. Is the needed quality rock present in sufficient thickness and at suitable depth? Are the market conditions satisfactory to warrant the added expense of underground start-up and production? In the last decade several Iowa stone producers have opted to shift production underground.

Cement Plant

Cement is a mixture of limestone, clay and others processed by high temperature calcination. Glass is from the limestone, quartz sand, soda ash and other mixture, and obtained by high temperature melting, iron with limestone used as flux to remove gangue, in steelmaking use lime to form slag materials to remove sulfur, phosphorus and other harmful impurities. Calcium carbide (main ingredient is CaC2) is from the lime and coke reacted in the furnace. Soda ash is produced by limestone, salt, ammonia and other raw materials through multi-step reaction (Solvay method). Soda lime and soda ash reaction (Caustic method) make caustic soda. Useing pure lime and chlorine reaction to bleach. The chemical processing of limestone make the calcium chloride, calcium nitrate, calcium sulfite etc. Lime is used to soften water and can remove temporary hardness of the water. Burning limestone processed into a more pure calcium carbonate powder, is used as filler of rubber, plastic, paper, toothpaste, cosmetics, etc. The soda lime made by caustic soda with lime for carbon dioxide absorbent. Quicklime is used as a dryer and disinfectant. In agriculture, lime sulfur mixture is mixed with lime, as well as Bordeaux mixture and other pesticides. The application of hydrated lime to the soil can neutralize the soil acidity and improve soil structure, supply plant-available calcium. Brush the tree trund with lime liquid can protect trees.
