The Greens are declaring it will oppose the conversion of coal into liquid in the Hunter Valley.

This follows questions to the NSW parliament regarding investigations into the Denman-Scone area from Greens senator Lee Rhiannon.

After Rhiannon uncovered a report from 1981 that outlined the area had suitable feedstock for coal liquefaction, she voiced her concern over what outcomes it may have.

"Where we're worried, it can just further lock us into a dependence on coal power. That's just bad news in terms of emissions, in terms of local environmental impact," she said.
