Starting this week, the Wii won’t be the only game console touting a motion control system. Sony’s Playstation Move hits stores on Sept. 17, bringing a new range of controllers and an accompanying selection of motion-enabled games to the Playstation 3. We've spent some quality time with the system; since we're guessing you've got questions, here are a few answers.

How is this different than the Wii?

In theory, it’s not. This is Sony’s response to the Wii’s success; Microsoft’s, named “Kinect,” will be out later this year.

But Move is considerably more advanced than the four year-old Wii control system. In addition to a suite of gyroscopic motion sensors, Move can employ head-tracking, voice recognition, and positional tracking of the controller. It’s unquestionably more accurate, more sensitive, and more high-tech...but in the end, it’s all about getting you playing games that have you jumping about in front of your TV.

Like the Wii.

What do you need to get started?

At the very least, you’ll need one Move controller -- the one with the colorful sphere on the end -- a Playstation Eye camera, and a Move-compatible game. Coincidentally, that’s exactly what Sony is offering in its main Move bundle, which includes a controller, a camera, and flagship game Sports Champions. If you want to get the most out of the system, though, budget another $50 for a second Move controller. Some games work best with one in each hand, to say nothing of the two-player possibilities.

If you’re the type who has to have everything, Sony’s also selling what it calls a “Move navigational controller," though it’s really just a trimmed-down Playstation pad that fits in one hand. It doesn’t have motion sensing capabilities, but it is just right for controlling games like first-person shooters. There’s also a charging station that’ll fit two Move controllers, although they also charge over USB just like a regular PS3 pad.

How much is it?

The basic Move bundle -- which we recommend, unless you already have a Playstation Eye camera -- costs just shy of $100. Separately, one Move controller retails for $50, while the optional navigational controller is $30. Most of the launch games are $40.

How do you set it up?

It won’t take long: if you can set up a Wii, you can set up Move.

Tuck the camera either above or below your TV, pair the controllers with your PS3, and, uh, you’re done. Every time you play, you’ll have to do a brief calibration dance -- hold the controller up by your shoulder, down by your side, point it at your belt buckle, do the hokey-pokey and turn yourself around -- but that’ll be second nature in no time.

Why does it have a glowing ball on the end?

For starters, because it looks cool. Of course, there's a bit more to it than that.

The camera uses that glowing orb to pin down the controller’s location in 3D space. It lights up when the controller’s in use in a color that will best stand out against the background, which helps greatly with its accuracy. Additionally, some games can flash the ball different colors to give you feedback. One thing to note: if you get your body between the controller and the camera or do anything else that obstructs its view of the glowing ball, you’ll confuse the system.

How well does it work?

Remarkably well. If you’ve been disappointed by the Wii’s sensitivity with sword-fighting games like Red Steel, Sony’s system is what you’ve been waiting for. Compared to the Wii, it’s seriously impressive how sensitive Move is to even the smallest of motions. There’s no perceptible lag, and none of that characteristic wobbliness of the cursor you see on the Wii. In short, Move is the real deal; it delivers on the promise of motion control in a way the Wii has never managed.

Following a journal failure on a 40-tonne/hour cement ball mill at RMC’s cement plant in Rugby, Metalock Engineering UK, Coventry orbitally machined the badly scored shaft to clean up enabling a new white metal bearing to be fitted and the mill returned to production with minimum disruption.

The Rugby Works ball mill had been operational for over 35 years and was due for replacement, indeed the new machine was on order, but the journal failed before the new mill was due for delivery. The mill is the last on the production line and blends and grinds clinker and gypsum together with other additives to make cement. As production could not be suspended until the new mill arrived, the Rugby Cement management team called in Metalock to discuss the situation and a possible solution.

Metalock’s recommendation was to orbitally machine the 1200mm diameter, 600mm long journal and remove sufficient material to clean up the shaft. This was accepted and following removal of 3mm from the diameter, the mill was re-assembled using a new white metal bearing to suit the revised shaft dimension.

Orbital machining involves having the cutting tool revolve around a stationary shaft. To achieve this at Rugby Cement, the inner bearing ring of the orbital turner was attached to a temporary bearing housing on the ball mill casing with the outer bearing supported on a temporary shaft extension. The rotating cutting tool head was driven via a hydraulic motor.

Orbital turning is just one of the services Metalock offers as part of its on-site machining capabilities. Others include milling, grinding and boring, all using specialist portable machine tools that the company has designed and built. This latest application demonstrated Metalock’s ability to provide solutions in emergency situations and enable a customer to resume production quickly and efficiently.

Commenting on the Metalock operation Julian Ward, Plant Maintenance Engineer at Rugby said that they knew the mill was reaching the end of its life but hoped it would remain in production until the new one arrived. “It didn’t, but Metalock’s expertise helped us out of a spot and got us back into production with minimum delay and disruption”, he added.

When Freshman Rep. Gerry Connolly, for example, says he’d be okay with a temporary extension of the tax cuts for the middle class and the rich, that complicates things, the aide said. (Connolly (D-VA) represents one of wealthiest districts in the nation. He’s said he gets Democrats’ arguments about just the middle class, but he also wants to help his own constituents.)

But the White House aide said word on Capitol Hill is that Democratic staffers are trying to come up with something that puts more spin on the ball, perhaps by creating a new tax bracket for millionaires. “They are trying to figure out something along those lines,” the aide said.

This year, Harvard University regained sole possession of the top spot in U.S.News & World Report's Best Colleges 2011 rankings of national universities. Last year, Harvard and Princeton University tied for first, but Princeton fell to second in the 2011 rankings of these large, research-oriented institutions. Williams College can once again boast that it's the nation's top-ranked national liberal arts college —a category of schools that place a higher emphasis on undergraduate education—as it ranked a spot ahead of fellow Massachusetts liberal arts school Amherst College for the second consecutive year.

This marks the 27th year that U.S. News has published college rankings. Though the top-ranked schools garner much acclaim, the rankings aren't produced simply to benefit students who are considering attending institutions like Harvard and Williams. U.S. News uses its array of college data to provide insight to students of various academic and socioeconomic backgrounds. There is a list of the best schools for B students, rankings of historically black colleges and universities, as well as rankings of the most diverse national universities. And though the worst of the financial crisis seems to have passed, finding value in the increasingly expensive world of higher education is still one of the most important — if not the most important —factors in choosing a school. To meet that need, U.S. News has compiled best value lists for national universities and national liberal arts colleges, which rank schools based on the average cost of attending — after need-based grants are taken into account — relative to their academic ranking.

The National Universities and National Liberal Arts Colleges lists are just two of several sets of rankings that are a part of U.S. News's evaluation of Best Colleges. Regional colleges and universities, which tend to draw heavily from their local area, and tend to have sparse doctoral program offerings, are ranked separately. Villanova University, Rollins College, Creighton University, and Trinity University are the top-ranked Regional Universities — schools that offer degrees up to the master's level and were ranked as "Master's Universities" in the past — in the North, South, Midwest and West, respectively. The top-ranked Regional Colleges — schools that offer bachelor's degrees and were classified as "Baccalaureate Colleges" in previous rankings — are the United States Coast Guard Academy in the North, Ouachita Baptist University in the South, Taylor University in the Midwest, and the United States Air Force Academy in the West.

Though California's public educational system is plagued by financial unrest and budget cutbacks, two of the state's schools are ranked as the top public national universities. The University of California-Berkeley, which is the 22nd ranked national university, is the top-ranked public school, followed by the University of California-Los Angeles. Rounding out the top five publics: University of Virginia, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Though schools at the top of the rankings deserve praise for their sterling academic standards, they shouldn't receive all of the credit. U.S. News asked college administrators to name schools they believe to have made sharp improvements to their academics and campus facilities. Based on the results, U.S. News ranked the top "Up and Comers" across several categories. The University of Maryland-Baltimore County was determined to be the fastest-improving national university and Hendrix College earned top billing for National Liberal Arts Colleges. The best up-and-coming Regional Universities are Wagner College in the North, Elon University in the South, Butler University in the Midwest and Abilene Christian University in the West.
